Apartment number 264 was silent as the residents listened for his car. They did this every night when he was gone past nine.
The woman would make hot cocoa and sit in her armchair with her blue bathrobe wrapped around her tiny body. The man would sit in his Black bathrobe by the door with his shotgun. Both knew what was to happen.
The man next door would come home in a couple of minutes, he always came home before midnight, and he would lock the car door, hide the keys and begin to go to his door.
And as he opened the door to his apartment his girlfriend, the woman, would greet him in her quiet voice.
"Good, you're back." She'd say happily. She'd hug him, give him a quick kiss and all would stay quiet for a minute as he looked over the small space they shared.
Then he would grab her shoulders and push her against the wall. He'd yell at her about something unrelated to anything except maybe his day that she never knew about.
He'd hit her again and again and she'd be begging for her life. The only reason that she was still alive was because the man in apartment 264 would stay behind the door until her boyfriend came in. He'd keep the door open with his foot and as soon as he heard the bang of her back against the wall, he'd shoot a blank into the sky.
The boyfriend would become startled and accuse her of cheating on him, but she'd be out cold.
She had never seen detail on the man in apartment 264. She'd only heard his voice in her vague memory. All she knew was that he was her saviour. She owed him her life on several occasions.
But today was different. Today the boyfriend wasn't drunk. Today he had been at a meeting.
And as he walked into the apartment he recognized her soft words of welcome. And this time, in his mind, she was not to survive.
He'd locked the door before the neighbor could put his foot in the way. He'd kept her quiet with his hand and instead of pushing her against the wall, he grabbed her neck.
He twisted and squeezed as she gasped for breath. She was trying to move his hands, but failed.
And then he fell as a loud gunshot was heard from the door. And there stood her saviour. The tall, lean man from apartment 264. The man who would call the paramedics for her, call the police and explain everything.
But the girl was in a fix. She didn't have the heart to press charges, nor was she in the right shape to do so. The man wouldn't pay for the laywer or anything like that. He saved her and that was that.
And as she awoke from her slight faint of loss of oxygen she looked at the door and saw the one man she had never expected to be her saviour.
And behind him stood a girl who she'd never expected to watch over her.
And as the paramedics to her to the emergency room she whispered their names. And no one could hear.
Chapter one of my Tokyo Mew Mew fanfiction. i know it doesn't sound like a TMM fanfic but it'll all fit together eventually.
